Interesting Hair Facts

Get to know your hair…..Here are some interesting hair facts.

* Healthy hair is highly elastic and can stretch 30% before snapping

* Hair can absorb its weight in water

* An average head of hair when twisted together can support 23 tons of weight (approximately 100 people.)

* Hair is stronger than copper wire of the same diameter

* Hair cell reproduction is the second most prolific in the human body; bone marrow being the first.

* This is the reason why hair is extremely sensitive to changes occurring in the body

* Hair is composed mainly of keratin (protein consisting of amino acids) and moisture

* Each hair grows from a follicle, which is an indentation in the skin. We are born with a specific number of follicles.

* Each scalp follicle on average grows 20-30 hairs in a lifetime

* The size of the follicle determines the thickness and length of the hair

* Each follicle has it’s own blood, nerve and muscle supply

* Hair grows about 1.5 inches (1.25cm) per month

* Hair grows faster in the summer, during sleep and between the ages of 16 to 24

* The growth phase of hair (anagen) lasts an average of three to five years so a full-length hair averages 18-30 inches (45-75cm.)

* About 90% of your hair is in the anagen (growth) phase
